Waves oblige as boardriders do battle

Not usually known as a surfing hotspot, Wanganui still managed to produce some decent waves for the Wanganui Boardriders Surf Classic on Saturday.

It was the ninth time the competition had been held.

Organiser Antony Rountree said about 26 surfers turned up at the North Mole for the competition, all from Wanganui.

"We have some very good surfers in Wanganui," Mr Rountree said.

Conditions meant the longboarding finals were held in the river.

He said New Zealand's west coast consistently produced waves - but not all of them were suitable for surfing.

"We have about 40 guys surfing in Wanganui but often we head up to Taranaki, where the waves are better."

He said there was a shortage of female surfers in Wanganui.

"We do have a women's trophy, but not one woman took part in competition this year."
