The next three years under a National Government will bring more drilling, mining and fracking for fossil fuels, environmental groups predict.
Whanganui electorate Green Party convenor Philip McConkey says the next three years won't be good for the environment based on the fact the National Party in the previous three years had done very little.
"Their fundamental stance is that the economy must come first, so the environment will suffer," Mr McConkey said.
The National Party saw polluters as necessary and it wasn't going to penalise or tax them because they were seen as vital to building a strong economy, he said.
But he was encouraged that there would be some "very smart power" Green MPs in Parliament who would bring balance to the debate on lignite and seabed mining.
Climate Justice Taranaki spokeswoman Emily Baile said there would be further dependence on oil for petrochemical-based farming, private transport and globalised trade.
Ms Bailey said the next years would see a growing people's movement across New Zealand and the world.
"There will be challenges to this greedy economic system that has caused global environmental and social destruction. A movement that stands up for climate justice and creates solutions."
