HOPES HIGH: David Haworth (right) is confident Brokeback Mountain is poised for a winning comeback in Wanganui today.

Connections of Brokeback Mountain have an anxious wait today to see if the talented horse is over his breathing problems.

The Faltaat 5-year-old has not raced since October 2010, but has had a wind operation since and trialled well enough for trainers David Haworth and Matt Dixon to line him up in the G Bristol and Sons 1200 at Wanganui today.

In his only campaign, Brokeback Mountain was beaten by a nose on debut by the talented Jetset Lad, a horse that has gone on to achieve far better things.

Brokeback Mountain then came out and convincingly won second up before being beaten again by a nose by Kabuki.

"We're happy with him and the trial was good enough for us to line him up here," Haworth said.

"He had a breathing affliction that has hopefully been resolved through his operation.

"It's very much wait and see before we decide what happens next, but he is a talented galloper ready to win," he said.

Brokeback Mountain, with James McDonald doing the riding honours, will need to display all his class to topple local hopes The Ritz and Gus.

The Ritz, trained by Wayne Marshment, has taken the eye in training, while Gus recorded both of his wins on his home track for Evan and JJ Rayner.
