Auckland YMCA runner Ingrid Frost completed a come-from-behind win in the women's section of the 3 Bridges Marathon in Wanganui on Saturday as she chased down Brisbane-based Kiwi Ngairita Jordan to claim yet another win in the event.
The well-travelled Frost eventually crossed the line in 3h 49m 33s, with Jordan holding on for second in 3h 54m 04s. Palmerston North's Debra Arnold was third home in 3h 59m 10s.
In the marathon walk, Taradale's Joff Hulbert re-claimed the title with a comfortable victory ahead of Wanganui's Tim Eaton and Auckland's Malcolm Gray. Hulbert's time of 4h 44m 28s was a superb effort in the testing conditions.
In the women's walk, Palmerston North's Denise Brunskill took advantage of Robyn Wolfsbauer succumbing to cramp towin in 5h 10m 59s - six minutes ahead of fellow Turbo Averil Sheehan. Napier's Wolfsbauer eventually crossed for third but her course record remained intact.
Rohan Biggs from Wellington Scottish easily dealt to the large half-marathon field as he careered away to win in 1h 14m 34s. There was some thought given to the former 3 Bridges marathon winner Biggs competing in the longer distance but he chose the half version which paid good dividends.
Hawera's Scott van Dyk was alone in second in 1h 21m 14s with Wanganui's Josh Payne third in 1h 24m 49s.
The women's version saw previous winner Wilma Minee claim another victory with a well-judged effort as she crossed the line in 1h 37m 44s. The Palmerston North runner was clear of Australian visitor Viv Scandlyn and another Palmerston runner Nicola Burton.
In the half-marathon walk, two long-time combatants fought a tough race as New Plymouth's David Wackrow used all his reserves to hold off Palmerston North's Peter Zwart. The final margin was only 53 seconds as the doughty Zwart kept his younger opponent honest.
Wackrow's time was a respectable 2h 11m 36s. Levin's Colin Horne trucked home in third.
Wanganui had to wait for Sharon Bennett to claim a home victory as she powered to a strong 2h 29m 47s to take the women's half-marathon walk ahead of New Plymouth's Anne Fraser. Fordell's Ann Bates was third in 2h 38m 31s.
The 10km and 5km events saw four race records as those competing were not as severely impacted by the warm conditions, with cloud cover cooling things down in time for the lesser distances.
In the 10km run, Aussie Ian McKee smashed the race record to clock an impressive 35m 33s. In the 10km walk both Trentham's John Roskvist and Wanganui's Gai Marie Smart lowered the records, returning 1h 2m 8s and 1 h 02m 59s respectively.
And Wanganui's Malcolm Hutchins lowered the 5km walk record to 34m 39s.
Other winners were Feilding's Melissa Thorne in the 10km run, Palmerston's Hayden Robinson in the 5km run, Wanganui's Sarah Hylton in the women's equivalent and Wanganui's Jenny Vickers in the 5km walk.
