Bus users increase following changes

The number of bus passengers in Wanganui has risen by 5 per cent over the past four years, Horizons council says.

And Horizons transport planner Wayne Wallace said he's looking forward to further growth in 2013.

The SuperGold (senior citizen) usage was fairly steady but hadn't increased too much since the free scheme was introduced by the government in 2008, he said.

Community feedback in March 2011 played a major role in recent improvements to bus services in Wanganui and these were having a positive impact.

The review of bus services in 2011 led to the relocation of the central terminal from Maria Place to Trafalgar Square and a more streamlined bus service.

"It also led to the introduction of a one-hour free bus transfer system and the creation of a stop on Wanganui Hospital grounds."

Another minor route change to the Castlecliff service was made late last year. The aim of that change was to make the service more accessible for Gonville residents, he said.

"But the growth in passenger numbers often comes down to factors such as parking and fuel costs as well as improvements to the service itself."
