The chance to dress up and spend a day out with mum yielded Stefanie McKnight the Great New Zealand Gifts best-dressed woman title at Saturday's Wanganui Cup race meeting.

It was the first time Miss McKnight had attended such an event and she was delighted with the award.

She designed and made the winning garment earlier this year out of scrap fabric from her days as a Whanganui UCOL computer graphic design and fashion student.

She graduated from UCOL last year and recently returned to Wanganui after a four-month OE in the UK.

Miss McKnight said the outfit, a dress-and-pants combination, was quite extreme and was suited for big events.

It was a variation on the design of an earlier award-winning garment she had produced and the 23-year-old said fashion was one of about three career options she was considering.

Stu Mosen, 41, was supposed to be playing cricket on Saturday. But his attendance at the Cup meeting was secured by his wife after he had his "arm twisted".

Mr Mosen wore his family tartan in the form of a kilt, for which he was named Specsavers best-dressed man.

Fashion in the Field judges included dapper New Zealand First leader Winston Peters and Wanganui Mayor Annette Main.
