Daytime burglaries warning

Burglars are targeting jewellery and electronic devices, with a surge in incidents in the St John's Hill, Otamatea, Parkdale areas.

Acting Senior Sergeant Andrew McDonald said it was unusual for an increase in burglaries to be happening in those areas.

"Historically, these areas are low crime areas. However, over the last few weeks, the increase is sufficient for us to be confident to say that someone or some group is active in the area." The reason could be as simple as someone moving into the area recently.

"Burglaries have been during the day and it appears the offenders are targeting jewellery and electronics."

Mr McDonald said offenders could be using reserves and parks to discreetly access or leave the properties in the three suburbs.

Police remind residents to close all windows, lock doors and for neighbours to keep a watch on properties around them.

They are interested to hear from anyone who is out for a walk or at home and sees anyone unfamiliar, or in areas that no one normally goes. Call 349 0600.
