Families in need to get meal delivered

They have been doing it for three decades and today it's deliveries as usual for members of the Wanganui South Rotary Club.

The Rotarians will drop off Christmas meals to needy families across the city, a task they do every Christmas Eve.

Neville Procter, the club's community director, said this year Wanganui South Rotary Club was providing enough food to feed 30 adults and 70 children.

Mr Procter said the names of the families were put forward by several city agencies and organisations including Birthright, Budget Advisory Service, Tupoho Whanganui and Sommerville Disability Support Services.

"When the Christmas meals first started we had a number of our members who were farmers and they always provided us with meat.

"Times have changed so now our club provides a frozen chicken in each meal pack," he said.

As well as the chicken, there were fresh vegetables donated by Laugesen's gardens, as well as tinned and fresh fruit, pavlovas, cream, strawberries and jellies.

Club members would deliver the meal packs from about 5pm today, Mr Procter said.
