There's no doubting the generosity of Wanganui's community.

It was this spirit of generosity which enabled the Wanganui Chronicle's garage sale to raise about $4000 for the upcoming Cancer Society Relay for Life.

The monster garage sale was held at 39 Taupo Quay and organiser Sandra Rickey said buyers were waiting outside before the doors opened at 9am.

"We had a constant stream of people through here from the time we opened the doors until we closed at 3pm," Ms Rickey said.

The sale was part of the Chronicle's efforts for the Relay for Life on March 16. Each team taking part in the 24-hour relay at Cooks Gardens must raise $1000 which goes to the Cancer Society and anything over that amount is a bonus for the society.

She said the Chronicle team wanted to raise more than other teams because the Cancer Society was such a worthy cause.

"We were chokka with stuff donated by the public. That public response was just amazing," Ms Rickey said.

A barbecue selling sausages and bacon butties was in hot demand, with all the food and table donated by local businesses. Even the building owner did not charge for use of the premises.More pictures, page 27.
