Wanganui High School has never finished higher than 12th in the A grade of the Lower North Island Secondary Schools Netball Championships.
This morning they play for fifth and sixth, after yesterday afternoon beating Waitara High 36-33 - a good comeback after losing to a talented Wellington College outfit 48-37.
WHS was perhaps a little tired/overawed when they started against Wellington, dropping a 17-8 quarter lead, and then only scoring four goals in the second quarter although they held Wellington to 12.
Wellington took the foot off the throat a bit after that, and the introduction of some youthful dash into the WHS midcourt in the form of Rachel Horrocks saw WHS actually take the second half 25-19.
Shannon Goldsworthy was outstanding at goal attack, and the same could be said for Siobhan Wooding at goal defence.
Collegiate plays off for 11th or 12th after beating Samuel marsden 38-28 and then unluckily going down 32-33 to Paraparaumu College.
In B grade Taihape Area School plays off for third and fourth after beating Hutt valley High 34-27 and then losing its first game of the tournament 35-30 to Aotea College.
Girls College plays off for 21st and 22nd, City College for 17th and 18th and Cullinane for 25th to 28th spot.
In hockey, Wanganui High School will come out of the top-ranked Rankin Cup tournament with a satisfactory first-up effort, today playing off for 11th against Auckland's St Kentigerns. That means there could be five teams behind them at tournament close.
WHS lost 0-2 to Auckland Grammar yesterday.

PICTURED: Wellington College's tall timber were too much for the local team in the Lower North Island Secondary Schools Netball Championships quarter-final yesterday. Here the attack end is in action, with goal attack Emma Kirkpatrick landing a goal watched by team-mate and goal shoot Pippa Loveard (left) and shorter WHS defenders Kodi Bartels (partially obscured) and Siobhan Wooding (looking up).
