Daniel George, the Hire A Hubby Wanganui franchisee, has given his time away to a community project that has resulted in a new playground for the Springvale Playcentre.

Mr George invited interested playcentres to submit their entries and plans for the free playground offer.

When asked why playcentres were selected to be the recipient, Mr George said he wanted to give something back to the community.

"When my children were younger, my wife was heavily involved with Playcentre. I know they are struggling for funds," he said.

Out of all the letters he received, Mr George chose Springvale Playcentre on Fox Rd because they had a clear vision of what they wanted.

The playground build took place over the weekend, despite the weather, and received a huge helping hand from Mitre 10, who donated all the building materials for the project.

Keen to get the job done, the build was scheduled to take place in just one day. Labour came courtesy of Mr George and two other Hire A Hubbies.

Parents of the children at Springvale Playcentre were also on hand to help out.

Jasmine Hessell, spokesperson for the playcentre, told the Chronicle all those at the centre were "super excited" when they found out that Mr George had chosen their project.

"The organisation runs off the smell of an oily rag and with lots of time and effort volunteered by the parents," she said. "We are extremely appreciative to receive this gift of skill, labour and materials."

The playground features a stage platform with an "imagination frame", allowing the children an outdoor space that is open to all sorts of creative play. The area will be planted with natives and it is hoped it will inspire new play ideas for kids and parents alike.
