Jam a lid on this rubbish

So often it's the few who spoil it for the rest of us.

Drink-drivers, speeding, excessive noise, litterbugs ... there are countless ways where the selfish attitudes of one or two people can have far-reaching consequences.

Certainly, many people living in Castlecliff and using the facilities there have had enough of those who use their neighbourhood as a dumping ground. And fair enough too.

Yesterday's story is not the first time this newspaper has highlighted issues in the seaside suburb.

Previous stories have identified offal and household rubbish among items left behind.

This latest surge has also seen mattresses, furniture, televisions and other electronic items strewn on the riverbank.

There can be no reason for any person to be in any doubt that their actions are not permitted.

The area is clearly not a dump, it is a recreational zone used by walkers, fishers and surfers among others.

Those doing this know they are in the wrong and arguments of the high cost of disposing of household waste do not excuse the blatant disregard for the community that they show.

So what to do about it?

It is likely those responsible will continue to illegally dump their waste, believing the police and council officers have more pressing matters. They will take the risk of the fines in the belief the risk of being caught is low.

In December, the Wanganui District Council published information that showed individuals who littered could face a fine of up to $5000, rising if the dumped items were deemed to be potentially dangerous, such as broken glass.

But that only works if the identity of the offender can be determined. And that is where we can all play a part.

It is our community, and our vigilance can help stop these people spoiling our neighbourhood.

Let's dob in the dumpers and keep our community safe, healthy and beautiful.
