The spikes were dead serious as were the blocks as the volleyball competition at the New Zealand Masters Games saw its final serves on Saturday afternoon.

As expected, the Division One final was a shootout of two giant rivals: the Jurassics and Sparta.

Former five-time champions, the Jurassics had been beaten in the 2011 final by the Auckland Spartas and had payback on their minds.

The lineups featured a number of ex-NZ level players, as well as standouts from other sports.

While each set was evenly contested 25-16, 25-22 and 25-20 respectively it was Jurassics who had the edge each time.

With vocal crowd support on every spike, the early exchanges were categorised by the all-in high fives, shimmy dance celebrations and just a hint of gamesmanship. Both sides used libero players back court specialists who set the ball up and do not rotate to the front of the net where the tall timber like to dominate.

In the other results, Division 2 was won by Lynxs while the social Division 3 grade was taken out by Positive Energy.
