A new wireless sound system waits at the end of a 21.1km half marathon for staff and students at Kaitoke School.

The problem is, school principal Dave Cripps, deputy principal Nic Welch, teachers Anna Welch and Megan Smith and school bus driver Michael Stratford will have to run the marathon to get it.

The group decided to enter the Mizuno Half Marathon in Taupo this Sunday as a way to raise over $1000 to kit out their new multipurpose room with a wireless sound system.

The team have been training for the past 7 weeks using a schedule from the marathon website. Training has involved 5:30am starts to fit in training before work, and longer runs on the weekend.

Mr Cripps said the runners had used the Round the Bridges run/walk to assess their fitness.

“We realised we weren’t professional athletes,” he said.

Each runner had been hitting up their friends and family for sponsorship – but they will only get the money if they make it through to the end.

Mr Cripps said he believed they had raised over $1000 already, but he wouldn’t know for sure how much until it was totalled up at the end of the run.

“We wanted to provide something for the students, and we are doing all the work for it! We care, that’s why we’re doing it, I’m looking forward to it.”
