Hot pace: Men's winner Glenn Daly (1490) leads women's winner Sally Gibbs (1406) and men's placegetters Darrin Grey (dark glasses, third) and Paul Forster (rear, second).
Sally Gibbs fancied her chances of breaking the Masters Games women's 10,000m record yesterday.
She didn't just break it, she destroyed it. Former Wanganui girl Gibbs, now in Katikati and a successful veterans athlete nationally, crushed the previous 38min 23sec time with 36min 28sec - and threatened at times to win the overall race.
But Sally, who has a workload this week that would stop a truck, says she never really considered seriously her chances of heading ultimate men's winner Glenn Daly (Wanganui).
"No, I just tried to keep them in my sights," Gibbs said. "I stayed with him as long as I could - but he actually picked up in the second lap and I stayed the same."
Gibbs' targets for this week?
The 800/1500m on the track, the 5km road race, cross-country, several swimming events - and oh, she forgot the triathlon. You never know, there could even be a half marathon in there somewhere.
"Call it 'over the hill and picking up speed'," said the 47-year-old.
Dad Murray suggests in her spare time she can help him in the garden at home. There won't be much gardening done.
Daly showed the benefits of a year off road running/harriers, and forecast a target time of 36min - he was a second out at 35min 59sec!
Daly's first time at the Masters was a success - he'll be making it a habit from now on.
