New store allows people to have a wheat-free treat

Melissa Greenwood lost her gall bladder but gained a shop.

It did not happen overnight, but 18 months ago when her gall bladder was removed, it meant she could no longer eat foods containing wheat.

The next step for the former secondary school teacher was to research what she had to do to maintain a healthy diet.

Not finding all the gluten free products under the one roof, and with her teaching position contract at an end, Mrs Greenwood decided to open a shop.

On Monday Mrs Greenwood and husband John's Gluten Free for Me in the Wanganui East shopping centre will open its doors.

The shop was also a much-desired change to be self-employed.

"We are 100 per cent dedicated gluten free that supports other food allergies."

Gluten Free for Me stocks wheat, dairy, egg and nut free products, as well as vegan.

Ceres organics is one of their suppliers, and they'll be stocking the Freedom and Venerdi breads.

Most people who eat gluten free products like a pie and now they'll be able to have a treat without the wheat, she says. There will be battered hot dogs, fish and chicken nuggets, but they will be frozen. And for those who enjoy an ice-cream, there's gluten free cones.

Mrs Greenwood said they were also offering a subsidy through Work and Income for those who suffered from celiac disease.

Trading hours are 9-5pm, with later opening on Thursdays. Saturday opening hours are 9-12pm .
