Golden girl Cherie Hawkins celebrated her 50th year on the job at the ANZ Bank in Wanganui yesterday.

Smiling and sporting a very youthful glow, Ms Hawkins said she had started work when she was 15.9 ... not quite 16, on January 14 at the Post Office in the tolls room.

She moved through the ranks in the Wanganui Post Office, the Post Office Savings Bank which became the ANZ, and she's always cherished the job.

"I have, I love working here, I'm very happy ... probably why I never left."

Even though she is 65 and can draw her superannuation and retire, she's not going to.

"No, I'll keep working. I don't want to retire yet ... I'm not nearly ready."

The customer services officer was presented with a massive bouquet, a commemorative Queen's Diamond Jubilee silver dollar and a set of the coin currency from 1965, two years after she started work.

"Well they couldn't find a set from 1963 you see ... but I don't mind."

After work the "girls" were off for a drink to celebrate their golden girl's years of faithful service.

"We're all looking forward to having a good night."
