No move yet on parallel parking

Wanganui District Council has no immediate plans to introduce parallel parking in Victoria Ave, according to Mayor Annette Main.

The Wanganui Chronicle recently reported concerns by Mainstreet Wanganui that the council's parking management plan proposes that half of Victoria Ave's angle parks be changed to parallel parks.

But Ms Main said there has been "a misunderstanding" about the council's plan.

She said the plan does mention the option of some parallel parking for the future. However, the council would not introduce it without further consultation with the community, she said.

"I believe there is some confusion because the draft plan did propose changing part of Victoria Ave to parallel parking. However, the council did not agree with this, and it is not included in the plan we have adopted."

Ms Main said a small number of parallel parks will be introduced in Maria Place to provide easier access for mobility vans.

"We will also be talking to interested parties to see whether there is a need for parallel parking loading zones, for example for courier vans, and how we could accommodate them in the existing CBD layout."

Ms Main said any proposal to change the parking in Victoria Ave would always need to return to council for approval.
