Open hearts and wallets to quake hit city, Wanganui urged

The Wanganui District Council has set up an appeal for earthquake-battered Christchurch residents.

Deputy Mayor Dot McKinnon has already sent a message of sympathy and support to Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker.

Councillor Ray Stevens said the appeal would follow the same format as appeals held for the Australian bushfires, which raised more than $28,000, and the Samoa tsunami, which brought in more than $43,000.

An official appeal day would be held on Friday, September 17, with collectors on the streets from 10am-3pm, and Mr Stevens would visit bars and restaurants in the evening with "Ray's Angels", collection buckets.

"It would also be great if schools got in behind it, I remember some came up with some great innovative ideas for the Samoa appeal," he said.

Friends of his in Christchurch knew folk in the city who needed help.

"You can prepare for other things, but you don't have any control over an earthquake, it's pretty scary for anyone."

Mr Stevens hoped to raise $25,000 but said he knew with their history of generosity Wanganui people would probably come though with more.

Donations can be made though the Wanganui District Council, or directly into a new Wanganui Appeal fund, ANZ bank account number 01-0790-0196473-00.

The money will be given to Christchurch Mayor Mr Parker to distribute.
