Police are determined to net the assailant behind a "disgraceful" pre-dawn attack on a newspaper runner.

Richard Frederick, 26, was part way through his delivery run about 5.45am last Friday when he was attacked with a softball bat on the corner of Harper St and Maire St in Gonville.

The assailant smashed Mr Frederick's prescription glasses and made off with his $400 cellphone.

Detective Sergeant Philip Taylor said an investigation into the attack had been launched and police were to keen to hear from anyone who may be able to assist them in their inquiries.

So far, there have been no leads, despite a door-knock of houses near the scene of the incident.

Mr Taylor said it was impossible to tell, at this stage, whether the attack was random or premeditated.

Mr Frederick had delivered the Wanganui Chronicle about Harper St for six years without incident, however, before fleeing, the assailant said: "I don't want to see you around here again."

The attacker is described as being in his 20s, about 5ft 11in (1.8m) tall, with black hair and wearing a black singlet and baggy, denim shorts.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Whanganui Police on 06 349 0600. Alternatively, information can be provided anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
