Police sound warning to Shemozzle-goers

Marton police are warning motorists to make sure their cars are legal and anyone attending tomorrow's Shemozzle to obey the liquor ban in Hunterville.

Constable Richard Gower of Marton police said there have been a few more unregistered and unwarranted cars returning to the Marton CBD. Motorists with such vehicles can expect an infringement notice. Police also warn that those attending the annual Shemozzle should be aware of the liquor ban in Hunterville.

"There will be no tolerance of those found in possession or consuming alcohol inside this area. A marquee has been set up for after the event, and this is the only public area where alcohol can be consumed," Mr Gower said.

Those who attend should not drink and drive and, for anyone who does have a drink, police ask they take care of themselves and their friends. "Intoxicated people are vulnerable to becoming victims, either to their own decisions, or at the hands of others."

Mr Gower said the area would be well patrolled by police. "Countless hours of organisation have been put into make this is a fun event, so don't spoil it by doing something dumb."

Last Wednesday, a 19-year old woman was taken to Wanganui Hospital with a suspected broken leg after crashing into a concrete power pole while travelling north on State Highway 1, near Marton.

Marton and Hunterville police have made 10 arrests in a fortnight for assaults, disorderly behaviour, breach of bail, breaching the local liquor ban, a burglary in Feilding, threatening behaviour and a historic assault, involving driving while disqualified and purchasing to supply liquor to a minor.
