Wanganui city yesterday opened its arms to visitors for the 2012 International Vintage Car Club Rally.

And rally entrants and invited guests almost packed out the Jubilee Stadium to witness a little bit of pomp and not too much ceremony at the official opening.

Flags of the nations represented in the rally were paraded by Air Training Corp members, and several dignitaries were driven into the stadium in vintage cars. Vintage Car Club of New Zealand national president John Coomber trundled in aboard Ian Chamberlain's 1906 Reo, while special guest Nick Mason motored in a passenger in a 1918 Model T Ford.

Mr Coomber thanked all who had brought the event together, as well as the 200 overseas entrants who had joined 500 New Zealand vehicles in the 10-day event.

He reserved special mention for the previous Wanganui District Council, which stumped up with the $100,000 seed funding that made the rally a reality.

"Without it we wouldn't be here today," he said.

His sentiment was echoed by Wanganui Mayor Annette Main, who said it was a "brave" decision.

Ms Main said the city was thrilled to host the event and welcomed competitors to "our home".

One of the biggest cheers came when Whanganui MP Chester Borrows said that, unlike many countries which allowed vintage cars on the road only on special days, New Zealand's roads were open all the time.

Mr Borrows said the rally meant a great deal to the city and the country because, "based on recent events it's good to have some good news again".

With the opening wrapped up, the official bit has been done and dusted. Now it's time for competitors to crank up their engines.
