Relay finds new home

Shifting the Relay for Life to Cooks Gardens is part of an undertaking to update the event.

Rejuvenated for 2013, the relay will be more inclusive of those in the community unable to take part physically.

Relay for Life 2013 co-ordinator Gerard Wills and Cancer Society Sun Smart and Smokefree health adviser Jane Beamsley launched the 2013 event to business and sports groups and those who had taken part in previous years.

They revealed a few "secrets" to breathe new life into the relay, which will be held on the grass.

Mr Wills said many people in the community who were elderly, children, disabled or sick could not participate in the 24-hour event.

However, Treadwell Gordon and Mars Petcare had given their corporate boxes for those people who would like to watch the action. "We will have nurses there to make sure they are safe," Mr Wills said.

In the next few months he will be out in the Waimarino and Rangitikei to ask how people want to be involved.

"We wanted to tell them about the steps to registration and also to let them know that part of the reason for being a captain is to fundraise."

The Relay for Life will be held March 16-17 next year.
