It was great weather for ducks yesterday but not for golfers.

But despite the persistent rain that fell throughout the day, indomitable players slogged their way around the nine holes of Tawhero Golf Complex as part of the NZ Masters Games' golfing programme.

They were playing in a gross and nett competition and for the most part umbrellas and wet-weather gear was the rule rather than the exception.

So much rain fell that large ponds formed across some of the fairways, including the sixth.

Joan Petersen, 71, a visitor from Manawatu Golf Club, said, like her three playing partners, she was determined to get her round completed even though "I hate playing in the rain".

On more than one occasion this group playing up the sixth got relief from the several small lakes that had formed on that fairway.

In her group were 70-year-old Jacqui Satchwell (Foxton), Barbara Glover, 73, from Tauranga and Feilding Golf Club member Helen Ormond, 69. While Ormond was competing in the 60-plus division the other three were in the 70-plus section.

The golf events continue today with the mixed foursomes at Marton Golf Club's Santoft course while the individual competition is being held across both Castlecliff and Wanganui courses in the city tomorrow and Friday.
