A German tourist who suffered major injuries to his head and face when his motorcycle collided with a four-wheel-drive on State Highway 4 north of Wanganui early Monday afternoon, died in Wanganui Hospital overnight.

The motorcyclist was 52-year-old Hans Jurgen Zech of Germany.

He was at the front of a group of 19 German motorcyclists who were touring the North Island. They were travelling to Taupo when the accident occurred on the Aberfeldy.

Whanganui road policing Sergeant Colin Wright said the man appeared to have driven on to the right-hand side of the road when he saw the vehicle as it came around the corner. Germans drive on the right-hand side of the road. The matter has now been referred to the Coroner.
