Road history repeats
In 1912 three men set out in a Model T Ford car to travel from Wellington to Auckland by a "non-existent" central King Country route.
There were no roads and the pioneers made their way via bullock tracks and bridle trails.
On Saturday 26 members of the New Zealand Model T Ford Club Rally re-enacting the journey arrived at Huntley School in Marton, where they regrouped before travelling north up State Highway One to Waiouru.
The Model Ts left Wellington at 7.30am that morning, and from Marton travelled north to Waiouru then turned left on to SH49 to Ohakune.
The rally then travelled to Raetihi then turned north to National Park, through Owhango, Kakai and on to Taumarunui. Today they were to leave Taumarunui at 8am to travel through Okahukuru, Tuhua, Matiere, Ohura, Aria, Pio Pio and on to Te Kuiti.
After a night in Te Kuiti, the rally will continue north to Drury, and on Wednesday will set out for the Museum of Transport and Technology in Auckland.
