Schoolboys bow out with a win
It may have been a sunny Saturday morning, but Wanganui High School's First XI had their Friday Night Lights moment at Victoria Park.
As must always be so with college-based teams, the senior players took to No4 field knowing the final game of the Premier 1 one-day cricket competition meant their final match in school colours.
The fairytale connotations basically stop there as this was a depleted nine-man Saracens team they faced rather than daunting opposition.
Nevertheless, the WHS teenagers took what they could get with a 116-run victory, their second of the competition.
"It wasn't our fielding, we dropped probably four catches, it was applying ourselves with the batting," said WHS captain Sam Roebuck. "The younger guys just ticked it over.
"It was the last game for a few of the guys so it was a good way to end."
His side amassed 224 before being dismissed off the final ball of the innings.
Roebuck's younger brother Josh proved the mainstay, coming in at No6 and compiling an impressive 74 not out.
Opener Jack Stewart made 67 to set the WHS on the path.
In return, with only nine players on the card Saracens were always up against it and folded their tent on 108.
Stewart completed a grand day with three wickets while the Roebuck brothers took a pair each.
