Teen bashed and slashed with bottle

A random act of violence with no motive has left a Wanganui teenager bruised, battered and needing hospital treatment for his wounds.

Senior Sergeant Dave Kirby said  three teenagers, a male and two females were walking down Victoria Ave about 2.20am on Sunday .

A group of six teenagers, aged between 14 and 17,  all dressed in dark clothing, attacked the 18-year-old male near the Caltex Service Station.

Mr Kirby said the teenager was bashed over the head with a bottle until it broke. He was then stabbed in the shoulder with the jagged broken bottle.

When his two female friends tried to help him, they were punched in the face by a female in the group.

The wounded teen was treated at Wanganui Hospital.

Six months ago the Chronicle reported that a problem with drunken and aggressive young people on Wanganui streets late on weekend nights had prompted local groups to cry enough is enough.

Scuffles, fights, abusive language, vandalism, urinating in shop doorways, broken bottles and piles of vomit were par for the course as groups of intoxicated young people walked the avenue.

In September, a young Ohakea airman was bashed in Victoria Ave in the early hours of a Sunday morning.

Chad Warner was taken to Wanganui Hospital with a broken jaw, concussion and a neck  injury.

Security guard Michael Haines saw the incident and rushed to help Mr Warner and  phone  police.

Wanganui man Caine Teki, 21, was jailed for eight months for the assault.

Armourguard security boss Wayne Watson said, after the attack, that when the rest of Wanganui  went to bed on Friday and Saturday nights, they had no idea of what was going on in town.

He said there were young, drunken kids walking the streets, and some were tough and wild.

Yesterday, Mr Watson said nothing had changed.

"It's hard for the the police, you know. They can't be everywhere, on every street corner."

Police would like to hear from anyone who may have seen a group of young Maori teenagers wearing dark clothing in the early hours of Sunday morning. Please phone  Whanganui Police Station on 349 0600.
