Wanganui man lands top role with security bureau

One of Wanganui's favourite sons is now the eyes and ears of the nation.

Defence Force chief Lieutenant General Jerry Mateparae, who grew up in Castlecliff, has been appointed director of the Government Communications Security Bureau.

Announcing his appointment yesterday, Prime Minister John Key said the career soldier had more than 38 years' distinguished military service, including 15 years in senior leadership roles.

"He has led the Defence Force admirably for the past four years. Jerry will make a valuable contribution to the GCSB, to New Zealand's security and defence, and to the country's international relations," Mr Key said.

The GCSB is the Government's electronic spy system, intercepting communication and sharing intelligence with other countries.

Lt Gen Mateparae has been appointed for a five-year term starting on February 7.

GCSB's current director is Air Marshal Sir Bruce Ferguson, who was appointed in 2006.

Defence Minister Wayne Mapp said the process to appoint Lt Gen Mateparae's successor had started and an appointment would be announced towards the end of the year.

"Lt Gen Mateparae has had a distinguished military career culminating in his appointment as Chief of Defence Force in May 2006," Dr Mapp said.

"His period of command has been marked by a very high operational tempo and several major acquisition programmes."

Dr Mapp said Lt Gen Mateparae had shown outstanding leadership and was highly respected throughout the Defence Force and overseas.

"It has been a privilege working with Lt Gen Mateparae.

"He has provided exceptional leadership."
