Women's champs returns

The popular North Island Women's Chartered Club Golf Championships will be hosted in Wanganui this weekend for the first time in more than a decade.

Hosted by the Castlecliff Club and played at the Castlecliff Golf Course, the event is expected to attract more than 140 women golfers from as far away as Kamo north of Whangarei and Johnsonville to the south. Teams from 28 North Island chartered clubs will compete.

Convenor Lyn Bristol said hosting the event was an extremely competitive exercise and the last time it was hosted in Wanganui was 2000, again by the Castlecliff Club.

Wanganui teams have also been entered from the Cosmopolitan and Castlecliff clubs.

Winners will be decided on the combined nett scores of the three women teams over the two days of competition, although there is also prizes for gross scores over the tournament.

"We will also host a supporters' tournament for husbands and supporters of the competition players which will be held on Saturday," Bristol said.

"We have had great support from the Wanganui business community. Not all of the support has been money, but it's not all about money." Play starts tomorrow and Sunday at 7.30am at the Castlecliff Golf Club and an awards dinner is scheduled for Sunday evening at the Castlecliff Club.
