One of the biggest golf fields seen at Castlecliff Golf Club will take part in the Steve Williams Fundraising Classic next Friday.
Co-organiser Grant Clark ? the others who have put many hours in getting it off the ground are Graeme Couper and Lindsay Edwards ? confirmed yesterday that there would be 256 starters ? "the absolute maximum" ? for the event that will raise money for junior golf and course improvements.
Main attraction, of course, will be the world's most famous caddy, Steve Williams, who is taking a spell from carrying Tiger Woods' bag to pursue another of his great interests ? raising money for junior golfers through the Steve Williams Foundation.
During the tournament, which will culminate with a dinner and auction at the Wanganui Function Centre, Williams will operate a target competition at the par-three 13th hole and also pose for photographs with the groups of four as they pass through.
Williams confirmed this week that he is bringing some classy golf equipment, some of it signed by Tiger Woods, to be auctioned. Also, he has donated some equipment signed by all the competitors in the recent celebrity stockcar event he and Woods competed in at Huntly.
The programme for the day is: 11am to 11.45 ? Lunch at the Castlecliff clubhouse (300 to be catered for); the golf tournament, 6pm?7pm drinks at the function Centre; 7pm?7.20pm prize-giving from the afternoon golf; 7.30pm?9pm dinner (360 diners); 9.15pm Steve Williams will conduct the fund?raising auction.
"We are really excited the way this has all come together," Clark said yesterday.
"We have had terrific support from golfers and the community in general. There will be at least seven trade displays on the course and we are hoping that Steve will be able to raise a substantial amount for junior golf at the evening's auction."
