Jill Hurley's belly dance fusion is based on the dances of the Middle East and American tribal styles, where women are empowered to feel their sexuality through the sensual movements of the ancient dances.
Mrs Hurley had been dancing for 10 years and said the graceful movements inspired women to acknowledge, express and celebrate their femininity.
"When you practise dancing, you reaffirm a connection to the little-known community of women around the world and across the centuries who shared and still share a passion for the dance."
The dance holds a fascination for its mystery, and for the dancer it is like meditation in motion.
In a celebration of International Women's Day and a part of the Wanganui's Fiesta of Wonderful Women, Family Planning Health promoter Heather Perry organised the dance class to promote positive sexual health.
Ms Perry said Family Planning was broad in its education around positive sexual health for children and adults.
Women's Network Wanganui manager Carla Donson said they had received a lot of "fabulous feedback" about the Fiesta events, which run until Thursday.
"It has generated a life of its own and has showcased wonderful Wanganui women."
